At Townville Academy we believe learning happens everywhere — not just inside the classroom. Our extensive outdoor spaces give every child regular, purposeful opportunities to explore, investigate and learn through hands‑on experiences that build knowledge, language, confidence and resilience.
Our spaces
- Wild meadow, woodland and large field — these provide changing, natural environments for exploration, seasonal study and practical outdoor projects.
- Class outdoor areas — each class has its own dedicated outdoor space for daily learning and play.
- Nursery outdoor area — a large, carefully organised space designed to meet the learning and development needs of our youngest children, including a large park area for gross‑motor play.
- 'Townville Beach' — a large sandpit area used across the Early Years to support sensory play, gross motor skills, early maths and imaginative language.
- Reception outdoor area — a bespoke space with a sensory trail and outdoor learning classrooms that extend the curriculum outside.
- Launchpad outdoor provision — an outdoor space equipped with a wide range of sensory resources to support children with specific learning needs.
How we use these spaces
- Forest school: During the Spring and Summer terms, Reception pupils take part in weekly Forest School sessions in our woodland and meadow. These lessons focus on risk‑managed exploration, tool use, teamwork and ecological understanding.
- Key Stage 1 forest activities: KS1 children can continue their outdoor learning through a Forest School after‑school club, giving them further time to develop practical skills and a love of the natural world.
- Curriculum links: Outdoor learning is used to deepen understanding across subjects — science, literacy, maths, expressive arts and personal, social and emotional development — with planned activities that build knowledge and vocabulary.
- Inclusion and sensory provision: Our Launchpad and Reception sensory resources ensure that outdoor learning is accessible and highly supportive for children with additional needs.
Benefits for our children
Children at Townville Academy grow in confidence, curiosity and independence through regular outdoor learning. They:
- develop physical skills and healthy habits;
- build vocabulary and subject knowledge through real‑world experiences;
- learn to work collaboratively, solve problems and take measured risks;
- learn to value the benefits of nature on their health and wellbeing;
- deepen their understanding of seasonal change, biodiversity and caring for the environment.
We’re proud that our outdoor provision supports high expectations for every child — giving them joyful, meaningful and curriculum‑rich experiences in nature.
